Google Dec 2025 Core Update: Volatility, AI Surges & Spam Attacks
Good Morning from the SEO Frontlines
If you have been checking your analytics over the holiday break and seeing wild fluctuations, do not panic. We are currently two weeks deep into the Google December 2025 Core Update, and the volatility is intense.
As of December 26th, we are seeing massive swings across multiple verticals and countries. The data shows a significant “tremor” (a spike in ranking changes) occurred on December 20th, and the dust still hasn’t settled.
Here is the latest status on the rollout and the two major trends defining this update.
When Will It End?
Based on the current trajectory, I predict the rollout will complete by early next week (marking the 2.5-week mark). However, given the holiday season, it is possible Google might let this linger until after January 1st, 2026, before officially announcing it is “done.”
Trend #1: The Massive Surge of AI (Grokipedia)
The most shocking data from this update is the accelerated growth of AI-generated answer engines.
“Grokipedia” (an AI-driven knowledge base) has seen an explosion in search visibility during this update.
- The Stats: The site now ranks for over 860,000+ queries.
- The Implication: This confirms that Google is continuing to reward AI-structured “answer” sites. We are watching closely to see if this growth holds or if it crashes before the update finishes.
Note for Business Owners: This reinforces why “Generative Engine Optimization” (GEO) is the future. If you aren’t optimizing for AI, you are losing real estate to sites like Grokipedia.
Trend #2: A Dangerous Surge in Spam
Unfortunately, this Core Update has also opened the door to a new wave of spam.
We are seeing a disturbing number of compromised sites surging in the index. These are legitimate websites that have been hacked or flooded with millions of spam pages unrelated to their original content.
- The Scale: Some example sites have jumped to 3.7 Million indexed URLs overnight—all spam.
- What Google is Doing: It is unclear if the algorithm will auto-correct this before the rollout ends, or if Google will have to issue a mass wave of Manual Actions (penalties) to clean up the mess.
What You Should Do Now
- Check Your Index: Go to Google Search Console. Look for a sudden spike in “Indexed Pages.” If you see thousands of new pages you didn’t create, you might be a victim of the spam surge.
- Sit Tight: If your rankings dropped on Dec 20th, do not make drastic changes yet. Wait for the official “Rollout Complete” announcement. Often, rankings bounce back at the end of an update.
I will continue to monitor the situation through the New Year.
